Here Comes the Railroad

Marshall Rocky Lane allows Bill Anderson to escape from prison hoping that he can lead Lane to the outlaw gang that Anderson was mixed up with went sent to prison, but Lane discovers that Anderson was framed for the bank robbery by the banker Henry Mason who now plans to force all of the cattlemen and ranchers to sell him their spreads (through his real estate syndicate) so that the railroad will pay him top dollar for the land rather than the owners. Mason substitutes one of his men for the railroad agent Harper (after his men have disposed of the real Harper), but Mason discovers that Anderson knew the real Harper and he tries to get him killed, as well as Lane who Mason suspects knows too much about his operations. The Rocky Lane entry is as good as many of the series despite the lack of action until the 45 minute mark, but director Keller and write DeMond make up for that with a good deal of suspense and anticipation throughout (with great pacing of the film) helped by the solid cast, even though Waller had a much smaller part than in many other Lane films. Rating, based on B westerns, 7

Although the defence of Rome has become impossible, Garibaldi declares his intent to continue the struggle for republican liberty and a unified Italy. With a following of four thousand men he begins a march across the Apennines with the aim of reaching Venice which is under siege but still resisting. However, the Bourbons and the Austrians pursue the volunteers who have in their ranks Frattini, a traitor secretly working to disunite the small but brave force. Many in fact desert and even the most loyal officer, Bueno, gives in to Frattini's proposals to impose summary justice. Anita Garibaldi, whom her husband had left behind in Rome because she was expecting a baby, rejoins him, and her influence, courage and vivacity succeed in restoring unity. San Marino gives refuge to the surviving force and the Austrians offer a cease-fire. But the terms of surrender proposed by the Austrians are so severe ...

CAMICIE ROSSE ("Red Shirts"),also known as ANITA GARIBALDI, is about Giuseppe Garibaldi's campaign in the north of Italy to oust the Austrians. Anna Magnani plays his firebrand wife, brandishing her sword and exhorting weary troops to acts of courage until she finally dies from the stress. The film has some nice battle scenes and the strong presence of Raf Vallone as Italy's George Washington but rates unfavorably alongside the other great Italian patriotic epics, Blasetti's "1860" and Rossellini's VIVA L'ITALIA. Francesco Rosi, assistant director, completed the film after Goffredo Alessandrini became ill. He would later become one of Italy's most renowned directors.

Buck Rogers (1939) re-edited from serial to feature format and re-released for theatrical distribution in 1953; an American soldier suspended in time wakes up to find himself in the futuristic world of the year 2500. Once settled he realizes that an evil villain, along with his gang of outlaws, has been trying his best to gain total control the the universe and everything in it. Buck Rogers has other plans for these thoughtless henchmen and will do anything he in his power to stop them in their tracks.

Review :

God Bless America!

Final words from this edited version of the 1939 serial, as the added on narrator warns the viewers of the threat of evil dictators. In this case the one in the film is Killer Kane but was obviously a thinly veiled allusion to Hitler when the serial was originally made.

The whole film is a grim allegory to the Nazi regime, right down to the mindless slave labour of Killer Kane's 'Robot Battalion,' fitted with a mind controlling helmet, they work till they die. A terrible reminder of the Nazi death camps.

Re-edited and released again in 1953, with an introduction and voice-over to explain the plot, it now returns as a warning against the then perceived 'Red Menace' of Starlin's Russia.

The editing is choppy at best but does get rid of a lot of the padding and recapping of the plot that make the old serials rather slow and boring to watch for today's modern audience. What we're left with is mainly the action which is somewhat simple by today's standards but was probably exciting at the time it was made.

The whole film is as corny as a box of Kellogs and with Buster Crabbe in the lead role, this is really a Flash Gordon story in all but name. Playing Buck Rogers who finds himself suspended in time and reawakened in the 25th century, Crabbe's easy going charm helps carry things along. As he quickly acclimatizes to his new environment and leads Earth's forces against the named 'Planet Outlaws' led by the aforementioned, Killer Kane.

It's strange viewing this from today's perspective, as in this future world there are no computers, mobile phones or even radar! The spaceship pilots have to look out the windows to see what's happening. Plus it seems the ships of the future only have one seat in them and everybody else stands. It all seems very primitive when compared to today's mega-budget special effects films but that's been rather unfair.

This is more something to watch as a reminder of how it used to be and seen like that, it's quite enjoyable. Just don't expect too much!

FRINE, CORTIGIANA D' ORIENTE (Mario Bonnard, 1953) **1/2

I had never heard of this one when it was announced for a late-night screening on Italian TV and, frankly, I only opted to watch it in view of director Bonnard’s involvement – since he later made THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (1959), starring Steve Reeves and co-directed by Sergio Leone.

However, it turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise, if not exactly a hidden gem. Incidentally, being a black-and-white production, it emerges as one of the last efforts to be made during Italy’s second – and, in a way, most interesting – phase of epic film-making, which is highlighted by such artistic triumphs as THE IRON CROWN (1941) and FABIOLA (1949). I say “most interesting” because, from what little I’ve seen, these films were decidedly pictorially stylish rather than merely ‘spectacular’. FRINE itself, in fact, is both literate and atmospheric…but also rather sexy (with a handful of unexpected scenes of fleeting nudity), which is an element that got considerably downplayed in later juvenile, low-brow and generally glum outings!

The narrative involves an aristocratic girl (the statuesque Elena Kleus) whose influential senator father opposes the current ruling tyrant – so, the latter frames him for the theft of a precious sacred jewel and has both the old man and his wife burned at the stake and their property confiscated, while the daughter is sold into slavery. Ironically, the one to buy her (unbeknownst to the girl) is the very man who had insinuated himself in her house as a beggar and planted the incriminating jewels; however, he’s not one to let an opportunity for profit go by and quickly sees the heroine (renamed Phryne, an appellation she picked up off of an Athenian prostitute thus marked) rise to the top of the ranks as a courtesan – swaying all the men in sight, who are willing to part with a considerable chunk of their wealth for her favors!

However, she has a hidden agenda: determined to right past wrongs, especially after her native Thebes is eroded by Alexander The Great, she not only uses the money to help her destitute people but also harbors ambitions to rebuild the city as a means of regaining her own stature. The Athenian council refuses such an offer and puts her on trial for self-aggrandisement; an orator (Pierre Cressoy), Phryne’s true love who had previously suffocated his jealousy in alcohol, regains his wits enough to assume her defense – while the guilt of her reptilian pimp (Giulio Donnini) is eventually exposed by the latter’s own deaf-mute but imposing black servant (John Kitzmiller). Tamara Lees also appears as the ‘deposed’ No. 1 courtesan – who even gets snubbed for the model of Aphrodite being sculpted by her own lover!

While perhaps only middling as drama, as I said, the film retains interest even today as an example of a genre in transition.

An adaptation of J. M. Barrie's story about a boy who never grew up. The three children of the Darling family receive a visit from Peter Pan, who takes them to Never Land, where an ongoing war between Peter's gang of rag-tag runaways and the evil Pirate Captain Hook is taking place.

Another Disney classic...how many are there now?

'Peter Pan' is undoubtedly one of the best of Disney's films. The story isn't too deep or meaningful, as, say, 'Bambi'. The power behind it is the familiarity. Every little kid yearns to haveadventures like Peter, so everyone identifies with the story. To tell the truth, the film is kind of episodic, like an extra-large TV cartoon special. The climax is fittingly climactic, but the final defeat of Hook isn't really powerful enough, which makes it disappointing after all the flashy swordplay. Speaking of Hook, he and Mr Smee are inevitably the scene-stealers, no matter how beloved Peter may be to children. The same way, in Hook/Smee scenes, if you throw in a hungry crocodile, the monstrous reptile will overshadow even Hook. Wendy really looks too old to be horrified about growing up, though, except for the sequences in which she fantasizes about Never Land with all the authenticity of a three-year-old. Never Land is beautiful, to say the least. The lush jungles and the mermaid lagoon is wonderfully brought to life, as is the eery Skull Island. This is the best showcase for the art direction. Also excellent is the detailed, meticulous design of the wooden hideout of the Lost Boys.

'Peter Pan' is one of my all-time favorites. It has humor, great animation, and the best part of it is a simplistic story that revolves around the desires of the child within all of us (I'm still twelve, so I never had to look too deep). A must-see for any animation fan, particularly Disney buffs, the young and the young-at-heart.

A ficticious war in an unidentified country provides the setting for this drama. Four soldiers survive the crash-landing of their plane to find themselves in a forest six miles behind enemy lines. The group, led by Lt. Corby, has a plan: They'll make their way to a nearby river, build a raft, and then, under cover of night, float back to friendly territory. Their plans for getting back safely are sidetracked by a young woman who stumbles across them as they hide in the woods, and by the nearby presence of an enemy general who one member of the group is determined to kill.

Not a complete artistic failure, but disappointing in one way I didn't expect

Stanley Kubrick, a director who I hold in the highest of esteems for his masterpieces (Clockwork Orange, 2001, The Killing, the Shining, Dr. Strangelove, etc) took the film out of circulation, leaving it to be found by only the hardcore fans and completists. After seeing the film for myself, I could see why. At the age of 24, Kubrick had already honed his craft of still photography for LOOK magazine, and had done a few short documentaries. Like many first-time filmmakers that came in the decades after him, his ambition for Fear and Desire was, in short, to just go and make a film, cheaply, more than likely to see if he could do it. On that level, he was successful. However, the film itself definitely is not.

I can't really say that the film is a failure because there was something I did like about it throughout. Even as the film's story went on the wayside, and the actors (whom Kubrick didn't have any idea how to direct, not being a man of the theater), his knack for producing and capturing some great images gets its seeds in this film. At times, there are some shots of close-ups and quick-shots in suspense/action scenes that are eye-catching. Unfortunately, this is all the good I can really say of the film. Although there are a couple of 'name' actors in the film (Frank Slivera, who also appeared in Killer's Kiss, and Paul Mazursky, a director in his own right), the performances overall are dull and very routine.

In fact, that is the film's main demise for me; whenever I watch any Kubrick film, even his early film noirs Killer's Kiss and the Killing, I can tell who made it, as his style by then became distinct, which would continue as he evolved as an artist. It wasn't 'artsy' like I might have pictured (which is usually the case with first-time directors like Scorsese and Spielberg), but watching this film not only did it feel like it wasn't Kubrick, it felt like a lot of the time I was watching some B (or even C) grade movie by a director that time forgot- not quite 'Ed Wood' bad, but close. The music is as standard as can be, the fades are pedestrian, and the plot seems to not really hold that much attention.

In short, as others have said and which I can agree, this is a "doodle pad" of a future ground-breaker, who shows some shots and a few edits that grab some attention (the best scene overall being when the soldiers take the dumb girl hostage), but not enough to really recommend except to those, like myself, who end up seeing everything by Kubrick (or, perhaps, have to see every ultra-low budget war film ever made), if only out of curiosity.

Hollywood Blackball Backlash Buries This Terrific Film

A film about escape from the Stalinist tyranny of the East Bloc? In the 1950s? By the Director who brought you Splendor in the Grass, East of Eden, and On The Waterfront? Never heard of it, huh? Perhaps it is time to look a little more closely at Hollywood's Celluloid Curtain and see if indeed our entertainment industry thinks that exposing totalitarianism is somehow not "politically correct." One seriously has to wonder why this star-studded, exciting, and uplifting film has received so little airtime over the years.

Watch Law and Order Trailer :

Review :

Pallid remake

Even with technicolor and location shooting, the remake of the classic western Law and Order with Walter Huston pales in comparison. Ronald Reagan just isn't Walter Huston, he doesn't create the singleminded purpose of Huston's Frame Johnson. Reagan's forte is affability, it doesn't translate well here.

Frame Johnson and his two brothers, played by Alex Nicol and Russell Johnson, leave Tombstone where Johnson is marshal because Johnson is tired of it. They go to Contention, but the problems of lawlessness are rampant there. Corrupt sheriff Barry Kelley and town boss Preston Foster pretty much run things their way. The decent citizens call on Reagan and the brothers to help out. Brother Alex Nicol does and is killed. You can figure the rest out.

The film does have the always lovely presence of Dorothy Malone, three years away from her Oscar in Written on the Wind. Dorothy was first noticed as the bookstore proprietess who catches Humphrey Bogart's eye in The Big Sleep. She did mostly westerns after that, usually as the nice girl in gingham that the hero gets. Good thing someone saw she had more going for her than that. Here she's a reluctant saloon owner, her old man left her the place and she runs it to earn a living. Girl's gotta do, what a girl's gotta do.

And of course you would have to be blind and ignorant of any kind of western history not to notice the obvious parallels between this film and any and all films with Wyatt Earp as the central character.

Tries for "exotic," winds up with "routine"

In the early 1950s, Hollywood tried to compete with television's small, b&w screens by offering a number of Technicolored adventure movies filled with glamorous stars and exotic backgrounds. It was a Golden Age for movies about pirates, the French Foreign Legion, Arabian nights, jungle safaris, lost cities of gold, etc. "The Diamond Queen" fits neatly into this category but it's a minor effort and, not surprisingly, has largely been forgotten.

A bigger budget would have helped. The movie begins in the France of Louis XIV but all we see there is one mundane set showing a jeweler's workshop. The transition to India is largely conveyed by a stock-shot of a sailing ship at sea. Aside from a few more stock-shots of monkeys and other wildlife, India consists of nothing more than a few sets which seem to be left-overs from other movies.

As for the cast, neither Fernando Lamas nor Gilbert Roland seem to have a drop of French blood in them, and trying to pass Arlene Dahl off as the "Queen of Nepal" is downright laughable. However, a much bigger problem is the script. It lacks the snappy dialog which can enliven this sort of thing and its plotting seems tired and perfunctory. One never gets a sense that its two heroes might be in serious danger. When they're thrown into the Mogul's dungeon, for example, the tortures to which they're subjected seem no worse than a frat-house hazing, though the sight of a sweaty Lamas stripped to the waist and in bondage is one of the movie's few highlights. Also, the romance between Lamas and Dahl never strikes any sparks, which makes the closing scene of the ship returning to France with its starry-eyed lovers seem both flat and implausible.

At a brisk 80 minutes, however, the movie never sinks to boredom, though it never comes close to enthralling, either.

Lost Planet looks a lot like California

Dr. Grood, a mad scientist, plans to conquer the Earth using his scientific inventions directed from a lost, but nearby planet Ergro. While investigating a flying saucer crash near Grood's earth hideout in the hills, Rex Barrow (news writer) and Tim Johnson (staff photographer) are kidnapped and sent to Ergro by Grood, along with Ella Dorn, whose father is on Ergro, used by Grood to develop his gadgets. For 15 chapters, Rex, Ella, Tim, and Prof. Dorn must overcome the hypnotic effects of Grood's mind control devices to prevent Grood from taking over the world. A very imaginative serial with new gadgets and inventions popping up in every chapter make this late Columbia chapterplay fun to watch. The serial is repetitive and probably has the least amount of fistfights of any serial (I think they all happened when Rex was invisible "fighting" Grood's planet guards.) The addition of the racketeer character, Wolper, doesn't help the serial like the character should have. The bad characters should have been meaner, IMO. Rating, based on serials, 4.

Rather disappointing effort for a nice cast

I would lke to give this a 6 but I just cannot even though I am a big Grable fan, Also a fan of Robertson but this was not his best performance by far. Maybe he felt as out of his element as I perceived him to be.

However the weak script and scenes lets the two of them have several moments that the songs couldn't completely ruin.

I did burn this to DVD because I really do want to have a complete library of both the stars.

The costumes were nice and the color was nice and the 4 major actors/actresses did as much as you could hope for in a weak vehicle.

Watch it but don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

As I think on it a 5 might be a little high but I will stick witn it

Who Shot The Sheriff?

For those of you who like discovering unknown sleeper westerns than The Last Posse is for you. No cowboy heroes in this one just an honest sheriff doing his job and a young man who let's his better side take over rather than live with a lie.

A posse comes in from the hunt with the bodies of the men they were hunting, the man whom these people robbed and a badly wounded Broderick Crawford who is the town sheriff. Some of the town's leading citizens like Will Wright, Warner Anderson, Raymond Greenleaf and Tom Powers are with the posse along with the adopted son of the robbery victim Charles Bickford. It's the son played by John Derek on whom the responsibility for the truth lies.

We hear some of the truth in flashback from the posse members. Bickford owns the local Ponderosa and he's not a benevolent type like Ben Cartwright. In fact he's pushed another rancher James Bell far enough. Bell and sons Guy Wilkerson and Skip Homeier rob him as he's making a deposit of six figures. It's Bickford who pulls a posse together and doesn't want the sheriff along, but Crawford goes anyway.

The desert trip brings out the truth about a lot of things and Derek has to face up to a different version about his past than he's been told. It's not a pretty picture.

The film is in stark black and white and plays for much of the time like a noir thriller. But this B film from Columbia is a real sleeper and not to be missed by either noir or western fans.

Delightful farce

This is a delightful farce about infidelity, fidelity, marriage and playing around. Don't expect nudity, but you can expect laughs, wit, imagination, excitement, and above all great humanity. If it were an American movie, it would be called a romantic comedy, but it is more than that. It is in the grand tradition of the comedy of manners which exposes the weaknesses of all the characters but still allows us to see them as deeply human. When the husband lusts after the famous courtesan, we see ourselves in similar moments. When the courtesan envies the married couple, we remember what it was like sometimes to be single and wish we weren't.

The cast, particularly the women, are excellent. The lovely Nadia Gray is more than capable of playing the courtesan. Fascinating, able to easily handle men, coquettish, she is wise but also slightly jaded, joyful but slightly sad and stylish but still longing for a simpler life without feeling sorry for herself. The real surprise and pleasure is Gina Lollobrigida. Gina has never been considered in the highest ranks of actresses, and in fact her talents do not quite ascend to that stellar level. However, she is certainly underrated. Considered simply a pretty face with a voluptuous body, she is also an intelligent actress with many moods and charms. Seeing her convincingly play a plain, unattractive wife is in itself an eyeopener. But then to see her transform herself into a beauty, is truly amazing. Mainly she does it by simply looking pretty or looking plain. There is certainly no CG or tricks with makeup. Her acting is also quite respectable as she plays a devoted and chaste wife who ends up in a sexually compromising situation. She is embarrassed but thrilled, confused but clearly has a natural way of pleasing men. She is innocent yet artful, naive yet clever, intellectual but clearly filled with unexpressed passion; in fact, she steals the show.

Gina is on my short list of actresses who are underrated, right up there with Tuesday Weld, and Hailey Mills. Nicolle Kidman used to be on this list about 5 years ago.

The movie was remade by Billy Wilder as "Kiss Me Stupid" which is also quite good in its own right and is historically significant for playing an important role in bringing down the Hollywood production code. "Wife for a Night" may not be a great movie but it is very entertaining. I'd give it a 6 but because of Gina's performance, it gets a 7.

Rex Allen and Slim Pickens are sent from Washington, D.C. to California in 1850 to speed up deliveries of mail to the goldfields, and find a destructive feud raging between two stage-line owners, Sam Sawyer and John Brockway. In their attempts to have their stages and drivers first on the dock to get the mail brought East by ship, the two have damaged each other's equipment and schedules to the point that no consignment of mail reaches the goldfields intact or on time. The on-purpose carelessness of the crewmen of the McCall Shipping Line adds to the problem. Rex's proposal that Brockway institute an overland mail service along the Iron Mountian Trail to compete with the McCall ship, meets with vicious opposition from Roger McCall, who also knows that his attempts to sabotage the Brockway plan will be blamed on Sawyer and he engineers a stampede of the horse herd Brockway buys for his new service. Brockway catches McCall's henchmen setting fire to his barn and is murdered. McCall ...

"Why you old cinder, you couldn't kill a dead fish with a cannon."

I must say, "Iron Mountain Trail" is one of the better "B" Westerns coming out of Republic Pictures in the 1950's. It stars a spirited Rex Allen in a tale involving not two, but three competing factions for the rights to a U.S. postal contract between San Francisco and San Diego. The leading contender at the film's opening is the McCall Shipping Lines, using a sea route between the two cities, while the Brockway Stage Line has been feuding with the Sawyer Express Company on land. Allen's character is a government postal inspector, not exactly impartial, who attempts to find a quicker and safer route for the mail to travel.

A contest develops between the three companies, with the winner to receive a two hundred thousand dollar contract to deliver the mail. The obligatory bad guy in this piece is Roger McCall (Grant Withers), owner of the McCall Shipping Lines, who first attempts to disrupt his opposition by stampeding a herd of horses needed to make the long distance between cities. Allen and Brockway driver Slim Pickens manage to salvage twenty horses, more than enough to make the run, so McCall gets more deadly. Having the Brockway owner killed and pinning it on Sam Sawyer (Forrest Taylor), McCall positions his captain, Mate Orrin (Roy Barcroft) to win the race.

Smelling a rat, Rex Allen gets to work, enlisting the aid of Nancy Sawyer (Nan Leslie), while taking charge of a stagecoach riding the Iron Mountain Trail. With Pickens as his sidekick, the pair are unsuccessful as a bad guy posse herds the stage over a damaged bridge and into the drink. But it gets worse - Nancy's father is railroaded by a quick hanging judge, based on public demand for justice and to avert the threat of a mob.

Before it's all over, Rex and Slim (appearing under their own names) uncover a shady operation McCall uses to staff his ship; a crooked bartender slips unsuspecting cowboys a mickey and they wind up hijacked. Allen's too sharp though, and rides to the rescue just in time to prevent an innocent man from hanging and to win the mail contract for the good guys - whew!

Rex Allen was one of the few "B" movie cowboys to continue his career in TV. There were Roy, Gene and Hoppy of course, though Allen's character was Dr. Bill Baxter, "Frontier Doctor" for one season in 1958. As a medical practitioner, Allen didn't get to mix it up much with a six gun, and the stories were so laid back as to be almost boring. By contrast, his portrayal in "Iron Mountain Trail" is energetic, complemented by a no nonsense aim and shoot style with his firearm.

Virtually all the movie cowboys came co-billed with their horses. Roy Rogers' Trigger is the most well known as "The Smartest Horse in the Movies". By contrast, Allen's mount Koko was nicknamed "The Miracle Horse of the Movies". Unfortunately, he doesn't perform any in this flick, though he's mentioned once by name. On the other hand, Koko plays second fiddle to a sneaker wearing chimp named Marie in this one. Too bad Marie is owned by bad guy Barcroft, though she winds up on the right side of the law by film's end - you can't make a monkey out of justice, even in a "B" Western!

Brilliant satire

This brilliant satire on Spanish values and propaganda of the early fifties was the only film co-directed by Bardem and Berlanga when they left the national film school. It was actually made in 1951 but was not distributed until 1953, following the success of ¡Bienvenido Mr Marshall! which they co-scripted.

Audie's Particular About Who He Works For

A couple of saddle pals, Audie Murphy and Charles Drake, go their separate ways after a job in the Johnson County War in Wyoming. Murphy heads for a job offer from cattle baron Donald Randolph. But like John Wayne who refuses a job from Ed Asner in El Dorado, Murphy decides to throw in with small rancher Paul Kelly. Of course that Paul has an attractive daughter in Susan Cabot has a great deal to do with it.

El Dorado is only one of the other westerns that you can see plot elements from. I can count The Man from Laramie, Coroner Creek, and Destry Rides Again in which parts of those films are plainly visible in Gunsmoke.

Audie Murphy was always one of the success stories of Hollywood and then unfortunately a tragedy. Our most decorated combat veteran could have had a choice of any number of careers after World War II. He had what only could be described as an instinct in that he chose a movie career. He turned out to be a natural for westerns.

His product was always good. Too bad his career never took the path of a successful long running television series or going into A budget projects like John Wayne. Either of those paths might have led him to a longer career and life.

In fact both leads in this film met tragic ends, Audie in a plane crash and Susan Cabot, a notorious Hollywood homicide at the hands of her son. Cabot, but for a decision to leave Universal to free lance, might also have gone a television route. Though she became a cult favorite with The Wasp Woman, cult parts are hard to come by and usually really type cast people.

By the way, though it is not the only element of Desty Rides Again in this film, saloon girl Mary Castle gets to sing the Marlene Dietrich classic See What the Boys in the Backroom will Have in Gunsmoke. And why not? Since Universal produced Destry Rides Again and they own the song why not use it here as it costs them not a cent.

I think western fans will not be disappointed in Gunsmoke.
