Still worth watching today

Unlike some other German movies of the 1950s, this one is still worth watching. It is a true adaptation of Erich Kästner's children's' novel of the same name. The author did not only write the screenplay himself , but also appears in the first and last scene and provides the narrator's voice in several scenes. With a cast of prominent German actors of the time, notably Paul Dahlke and Paul Klinger, and budding rock'n'roll star Peter Kraus in his first movie role, the movie tells the story of the "Tertia" students (7th/8th grade) in a small town boarding school, who continue a "prehistoric" feud with the boys from a neighbouring school. Woven into this narrative are questions of honesty, courage, loyalty, friendship - and money issues, which never lack in Kästner's books. The boys also write and perform a play about the lessons with their favourite teacher, Johannes Böck called Justus (the just one) and moreover manage to bring him back together with a long-lost childhood friend. I was astonished to see the very good acting of the child actors, among them now famous German director Michael Verhoeven. Even though it's sometimes obvious that painted scenery is used and the editing is somewhat less varied than what we're used to these days, the movie never seems dated in a way that makes it an effort to watch - quite the contrary!

Strange Fascination (1952)

A European pianist comes to America and falls for a dancehall girl. Written, directed, produced and starring Hugo Haas, who doesn't do a particularly good job in any of those roles. The script is lifeless and poorly written (including a second act twist that doesn't make a lick of sense), a lot of very prosaic drama that never catches fire. The camera-work is entirely uninteresting, and borderline amateurish. The performances and characterizations are bland. This is the first of seven films that Haas did with pin-up gal Cleo Moore, which is odd because here they have little chemistry together. The film is categorized as noir, but that seems like a stretch by any definition of the genre. Only in the final 10 minutes do we get any compelling plot material, and I will say I quite liked the ending. But otherwise it's a snooze.

Wonderful film

I just viewed Jean Renoir's wonderful film, French Can Can. It is a visual delight and a great entertainment. The recently produced Moulin Rouge pales by comparison. I didn't quite get all of the praise that the recent movie received. Now I'm convinced more than ever, that my appraisal was correct after seeing a master film maker like Jean Renoir's version of the same story. He succeeded in getting great performances out of his entire cast, and the great French actor, Jean Gabin was in rare form. The dance sequence near the end was one of the most exciting one I'd ever seen. It was long, but I didn't want it to end. This film deserves to receive more recognition than it's got.

A forgotten jewel

(Hallmark Home Entertainment VHS 91 mins) I first saw this movie almost exactly fifty years ago. At that time it was known as The Promoter. This film shows without a doubt the enormous talents of Alec Guinness. I seem to feel that it did not receive the acclaim of some other Guinness films possibly due the date of its release, 1952. Just after Lavender Hill Mob and before A Captain's Paradise. There is absolutely nothing I didn't like about the picture. The three principal ladies were all superb. This was the only film Guinness made with Petula Clark or Glynis Johns. He did make Great Expectations and Kind Hearts and Coronets with Valerie Hobson. I have always remembered one scene with Guinness and Johns. In the movie they are engaged and Johns spends Guinness' money as fast as she could. At one store the shop keeper asks for the name and address, so as to be able to have the package delivered. Guinness, without hesitating one instant answers, "Rockefeller - Buckingham Palace." Wonderful film - great entertainment!

I'm from Socorro! Never knew it was in a movie!

I just saw this movie last night as I was channel surfing. I of course watched it as it is set in my quaint little city of Socorro, NM, right on the Rio Grande. I'd like to find out where it was filmed. Just made me even more homesick, as I work in Washington, DC and miss the quiet peacefulness of Socorro. Was a pretty good movie too. As far as westerns go, it is no "Big Jake" (though the director of this movie actually teamed with John Wayne to direct Big Jake") or Silverado, but I did find it an easy watch. Predictable, but when you've seen as many movies as I, not much surprises me, unless the writing is just down right amazing. Again, just amazed that my little seemingly insignificant hometown was ever featured or mentioned in a movie.

Sounds good in theory, but in practice...

The country is named Lampidorra, and it's a tiny municipality in Europe, the smallest country in fact, kind of squished in next to Switzerland. It's so small, it makes Switzerland look the size of Mongolia. The citizens there have a thriving industry that has kept them going for years - the industry of smuggling.

A rich American buys half the country, and then dies. A grand search is on to find his nearest heir, who ends up being something like an Aunt's sister-in-law's nephew's second-cousin, twice removed. She travels to the country to sort out what's going on, and is shocked to see that they hold smuggling highly as their main source of income!

Sounds like a wonderful movie, eh? Good idea for a story line and somecomedy, and Dirk Bogarde in pyjamas. But the whole thing just isn't executed well, and it gets very trying after the first half-hour or so. The start is amusing, where it's narrated - telling you Lampidorra's history and also thanking the citizens for speaking English rather than Lampidorran during filming, thus wiping out the need for English subtitles! Overall though, only 5/10.

Very good

Very atypical period piece from Naruse. It's actually a samurai picture, of sorts, though it's definitely more melodrama than action. Michiyo Kogure and Tomoemon Otani star as the titular pair. Kogure is the widow of an assassinated samurai and Otani was that man's pupil. They have been sent out to seek revenge on the murderer, Kogure's first suitor (So Yamamura), but their long and arduous journey has so far been fruitless. The two start to fall in love and question whether their quest for revenge is even worth it. This could have been a bit better told near the beginning - for the first forty minutes or so I was playing catch-up with the plot. But once I got a hold of it, I found it quite powerful, with a lot of subtle, unexpressed emotions. All three of the main cast members are excellent.

French death row depicted in anti-capital punishment movie

"Nous sommes tous assassins" or "We are all murderers" illustrates its anti-capital punishment theme by taking us inside a prison and inside the cells where prisoners condemned to be executed wait and live in fear. The movie doesn't preach. It depicts. Its indictment of capital punishment is mostly indirect. It goes beyond the inhumane aspects. The men who are the murderers and being murdered in the name of social order are, in one way or another, shown as pitiable wretches, unfortunates, misfits. For this reason, it is difficult to see that the threats they pose to social order demand execution. On the other hand, it is far from clear that lengthy imprisonment solves the basic problem of criminal actions.

Those involved within the system, the guards, the chaplains, the doctors, the officials, can't do anything about it. Society grinds on.

This movie is worth seeing, but it's not a classic. Every so often, a scene or a part of a scene rises to excellence, but too many times the screenplay doesn't gel. It may be that badly translated subtitles are partly responsible. The movie is only occasionally gripping, but does have its moments. Mostly one feels as if one is at a distance watching the torment of the prisoners. The dramatization is not top quality. It simply doesn't click the way it should. However, it has some outstanding moments when it focuses on the inmates as they are led to their executions. And Raymond Pellegrin is memorable, he's so neurotic and jumpy.

Brotherly love .........

This later film from the singing cowboy's career boasts good writing and is further aided by the presence of the great Smiley Burnette. Gene takes on a protection racket, murderers and a wayward kid brother. Along the way, he croons a few tunes and Smiley gets to sing & clown around as comic relief.

This film was not especially noteworthy, but the teaming of Autry, Smiley and Gail Davis was an enjoyable combination. Bob Livingston also appears in this pretty standard Autry film. The action was nicely done, but more action scenes would have been preferable.

This one is average, but Autry fans should enjoy it.

Unusual funny and human comedy-drama

A sleeper that evidently few have seen recently, this unpretentious comedy-drama can take an honorable mention in the long list of prison films. An early Stanley Kramer production, it received critical acclaim but was not a box-office success. Nevertheless, it has good character acting, some very amusing scenes, and enough dramatic tension to hold the attention and set off the comic moments.

Don't be put off by the overly earnest opening, as the new, wet-behind-the-ears psychiatrist arrives at the prison hoping to reform the penitentiary system single-handed. Although Kramer reportedly had prison reform in mind in making the film, this movie is not about psychological theories, which are lightly passed over with buzz-word gobbledygook. It's not even about the good doctor himself or his research so much as it's about the six cons of the title, as they become human beings to us.

Speaking of buzz-words, the genial Connie's psycho-babble malapropisms are among the best of the running gags. The many funny scenes stand out against the grim realism of the penitentiary, shot on location at San Quentin. The comedy also contrasts sharply with the dramatic dilemma the "doc" must face between gaining (and keeping) the confidence of his six cons and learning too much to be healthy in the deadly reality of prison life. But overall this is a human comedy more than an edge-of-your seat drama.

There are excellent photographic moments using long wide-angle shots to dramatize the starkness of the prison environment, which contrast well with the friendly intimacy gradually established in the psychiatrist's office. And the movie gets an extra star for the fine score by Dimitri Tiomkin, famous for many much better-known movies from "It's a Wonderful Life" to "The Guns of Navarone".

It's well worth watching for this to come around on television, as you are unlikely to find it at your corner video store -- not available on DVD or VHS at the time of writing.

Great Songs and Guru Dutt's Style

Aar Paar has all the style that Guru Dutt brought to every film he made. He plays with light and shadows like only he has done in Hindi cinema. But a weak storyline pulls the film down.

The plot just lingers over the characters most of the time and the story does not move forward. There is a hint of a bank robbery coming but all it does is to set the background for the climax. At the end, it is difficult to understand what the story was about.

Inspite of all this, Aar Paar is considered an important film in Guru Dutt's career. Not only because it is technically right most of the time, like any of his films, but more because in Kaalu he creates one of the most realistic tramp-with-a-golden-heart characters seen in Hindi films. That character is seen in hundreds of Hindi films but hardly any is as real as Kaalu.

The film has some great songs ever. 'Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar', 'Ye Lo Main Haari Piya' and 'Baabuji Dheere Chalna' are timeless. Easily a Hindi film classic.

Refreshing, Innocent & Undemanding

This comparatively little known film, with the extremely unlikely storyline is, nevertheless a joy to watch. It is pure escapism with more than a hint of nostalgia for those of us of a certain age. The script is good with some nice one-liners, but because the plot itself is obviously rather weak things become a little laboured. I doubt it would come over as successfully as it does, where it not for the one and only Rosalind Russell - ever able to combine excellent dramatic and comedic acting with the epitome of Hollywood glamour. And where oh where would it have been without that stalwart, always believable, and I think much underrated actor, Paul Douglas as Russell's long suffering ex husband.

If you feel like some light hearted 1950s entertainment you could do a lot worse.
