The lives of shop girls stripped bare. The Crowded Day (AKA: Shop Spoiled) is directed by John Guillermin and adapted to screenplay by Talbot Rothwell from a story by John Paddy Carstairs and Moie Charles. It stars John Gregson, Joan Rice, Freda Jackson, Patricia Marmont, Josephine Griffin, Sonia Holm, Patricia Plunket, Rachael Roberts and Vera Day. Music is by Edwin Astley and cinematography by Gordon Dines.

Bunting and Hobbs Department Store, Christmas week, and the shop girls deal with what life has to throw at them this yuletide season.

A rare British movie that if only for the fine ensemble cast of actors gathered, should see it more widely known. By definition it's a bitter- sweet picture, blending comedy with drama is never easy to do, but the makers here manage to pull it off with some skill. The focus is on the post-war working women of this particular department store, this provides the story with a number of different character threads, all intelligently scripted by Rothwell.

From the heavy duty angle of an unmarried pregnancy and the desperation that can cause, to more lighter themes of jealously as a weapon and getting one's own back on the supervisor, there's enough here to either tug the heart or put a smile on the face. Guillermin does a fine job with his direction, with his camera work very effective for each character strand.

When the story is of the dramatic kind, he (and Dines) brings noir visuals into play, with foreboding shadows reflecting the mood of the players and canted angles enhancing psychological discord. For the more fluffy aspects of plotting, the camera is mobile and breezy, the lighting perky as Christmas comes forth from the screen.

The Crowded Day is a twin axis thing at heart, it shows us all that the holiday season often works on different levels for many. Where some have the world at their feet, others are prone to misery. Food for thought. 8/10

Print I viewed was absolutely pristine, showed on the UK Sky Arts Channel. BFI have released it as part of their Adelphi Collection in a double Blu-ray and DVD package that also contains Guillermin's Song of Paris.

SINS OF ROME (Riccardo Freda, 1953) **1/2

The version I watched of this peplum (dealing with the exploits of Spartacus – played by Massimo Girotti – here a mercenary prior to being made a slave!) is the edited-down (running 71 rather than 94 minutes!) English-dubbed version released in the U.S. by RKO. The result, at least, is good-looking (featuring lavish sets as befits the country that virtually invented the "Kolossal") despite the rather dark print at hand!

Obviously, however, the film under review does not stand up to comparisons with the 3¼-hours SPARTACUS (1960) and should not really be since the two are so different in tone and approach. For one thing, there is no gladiatoral action(!) in this case, but rather the arena contains a pool in which a ship is anchored! On it, a dance (with tied-up slaves as props!) is staged…before lions are unleashed upon them – which are eventually repelled by the hero's timely intervention! Leading lady Ludmilla Tcherina is rather underused throughout though, being foremost a renowned dancer, at least the obligatory routines in this vein are classier than usual for the genre! Thinking Spartacus killed her father, Tcherina starts out by hating Girotti but, predictably, falls for him regardless. Gianna Maria Canale, then, plays the daughter of an altogether ineffectual Crassus – a femme fatale who occasionally makes Spartacus stray from his mission…before the cries of a slave receiving an off-screen whipping brings him back to his senses! As for the Peter Ustinov figure from the later Hollywood rendition, he is here treated as an out-and-out villain!

The reasonably stylish film (bearing the mark of its maker, who happens to be Canale's own real-life husband!) also contrives 3 other well-handled action sequences: the slaves' dive to freedom, their sneak attack on the Romans (in which the latter army's tents are set on fire), and the standard open-field clash in which the hero ultimately falls (again, being of a more modest pedigree, there is no mass crucifixion this time around!). For the record, the Italians would return to this theme 10 years later with THE SLAVE aka SON OF SPARTACUS with their most popular muscleman, Steve Reeves, in the lead.

Difficulty Balancing Comedy And Drama

While I am a fan of British movies, particularly comedies of the 1950s and 1960s, I was not familiar with this movie. However I had warm expectations given the cast led by the usually dependable John Gregson and Muriel Pavlow. The movie concerns a British air force base that is activated as a training facility. Requiring a target range the government conscripts a nearby marsh, the Island of Children, for that purpose. The marsh is a wildlife habitat principally for birds (hence title Conflict of Wings between birds and aircraft). Obviously the local inhabitants, led by native daughter Muriel Pavlow and an assortment of colorful character actors (i.e. Niall MacGinnis, Frederick Piper), lead a fight to save the marsh. This leads to conflict with her boyfriend, airman John Gregson, as well as the base commander Kieron Moore. Combining comedy and drama is difficult and here it doesn't really succeed. There is almost a sub-genre of British comedies about colorful locals rising up (i.e. Passport To Pimlico, Titfield Thunderbolt). However, in all instances, the enemy are incompetent bureaucrats or buffoons. Here the air force is shown as capable, concerned but committed to their responsibilities. Periodically Kieron Moore is required to look out into mid-space and give a speech about the need for military preparedness, with appropriate references to just past crisises in Korea and Malaysia. The fact that decent people have to make difficult choices may be more representative of real life but it is less satisfying in reel life. Here the shifting between comic efforts and near tragic efforts by the the local population results in an uneven and ultimately unsatisfying cinema experience. Acting is generally good and technical credits, including color photography of the marsh, are also good.

In spite of the more-than-pedestrian B-title, this minor-A western from Universal is more of a character study of three people than it is a run-of-the-mill western. It has only a couple of gunshots and no killings and no blood-letting, and is ideally suited for the laconic, take-it-easy and laid-back nature of the always-great Joel McCrea as Del "Rock" Rockwell. Here, he is a man wise to the nature of women and horses, attemptiing to establish a homestead with the aid of his adopted-son Til (Race Gentry). They join neighboring rancher Alida Spain (Mari Blanchard) in her quest to capture a wild black stallion (Outlaw). Rockwell taunts her while the 20-year-old Til falls in love with her and she, of course, is falling in love with Rockwell. Neighboring rancher Jennings (Murvyn Vye) brings some conflict to the proceedings but nothing that Rockwell can't handle without the use of guns.

Outlaw the Wonder Horse!

Black Horse Canyon is directed by Jesse Hibbs and adapted to screenplay by Geoffrey Homes and David Lang from the novel The Wild Horse written by Les Savage Junior. It stars Joel McCrea, Mari Blanchard, Race Gentry and Murvyn Vye. Music is by Joseph Gershenson and cinematography by George Robinson.

Although the print of the film I saw was sadly old and scratchy, this is a lovely photographed Western out of Bloomquist Ranch, Douglas, Arizona. A place, it seems, that bizarrely wasn't used in any other Oaters. This along with the magnificent horse at the centre of the plot, makes this a comfortable recommendation for the B Western fan. Story is pretty mundane stuff, a group of people with different motives attempt to capture the wild black stallion for stud purposes. This ensures that we are exclusively out in the open landscapes and privy to much chasing, lassoing, bucking and snorting. There's a bubbling under the surface love triangle, which we know how it's going to end up, and a good fist-fight crowns the proceedings. Gentry and Blanchard are weak, while Vye's villain is barely realised, but McCrea turns in yet another solid and knowing performance. All the cast, you sense, understand that Outlaw the horse is the star of the show. And rightly so. 6.5/10

A great serial from the golden age ........

Clayton Moore stars in this great western serial that provides all the thrills, chills and cliffhangers that best characterized the genre. Moore, on temporary hiatus from his Lone Ranger role, tries to calm frontier hostilities between the son of the famed Indian leader Geronimo and local citizens.

As the heroic Moore works to bring peace with Geronimo's band, a band of local scoundrels moves to escalate hostilities. As can be imagined, wild chases, shootouts and fistfights are the exciting result.

This serial is one of the best of the 1950's. Clayton Moore excelled in this type of role, with great humor coupled with determined strength. This is grand entertainment and is highly recommended.

A fantastique frightmare from Mexico's Golden Age

Borrowing heavily from its uber-influential neighbors to the north, Mexico's Epoca De Oro (1930s - 1950s) can best be described as "Hollywood in a fun house mirror", an era as passionate and extravagant as its people and unafraid to blend baroque religious symbolism with primitive superstition. A prime example is LA BRUJA with lovely Lilia del Valle, the exotic star of many a cabaretera ("noir musicals" for lack of a better description). Blending Cinderella, FRANKENSTEIN, and Tod Browning's FREAKS, it's about a kindly doctor who invents an antibiotic that an unscrupulous trio of businessmen attempt to steal from him by breaking into his lab and killing his daughter. Hellbent on revenge, the doc asks Paulescu, a "king of the gypsies" figure, to borrow his horribly deformed servant who he turns into a ravishing beauty using another secret formula he'd been working on. Playing Pygmalion to her Galatea, he transforms the hag into the ravishing Countess Nora Novak who lures two of the thieves to their deaths before trouble brews big time when she falls in love with the third...

If Hollywood had made this it would have been with Acquanetta at Universal for the Saturday matinée crowd but south of the border, this wasn't a horror movie as much as a "romantic fantasy" of the kind audiences couldn't get enough of. The witch, shunned and mistreated by all, is first and foremost a woman who has never known kindness and she's torn between her duty to the doctor who made her desirable and the handsome man who loves her. Set in the Balkans, the tale is atmospherically filmed in black and white with quite a few WTF? moments, most notably Paulescu's "Night Court", a motley crew of cripples, misfits, and outsiders who band together to mete out justice to evildoers. This was obviously a star vehicle for Lilia del Valle (looking a bit like Hollywood's Faith Domergue) who's transformed from sympathetic monstrosity under lots of Lon Chaney makeup to cold-blooded killer garbed in the latest gowns, jewels, and furs to a woman in love who's willing to sacrifice all. Played straight, LA BRUJA is fantastique fun all the way around and an enjoyable introduction to Mexico's "Golden Age".

On the Downgrade

Hard not to agree with the other reviewers—this is not the duo's best oater. The boys appear to be just going through the motions without the usual spark or enlivening banter. Add to that an all-too-familiar storyline, and the results are mediocre, to say the least.

I always admired Holt as maybe the only matinée hero with a sidekick bigger and handsomer than he, and no buffoon, to boot. Together, they were an appealing exception to the usual. But, by 1952, the handwriting was indeed on the wall. These matinée cheapo's were about to be absorbed into the living room's little black box. Too bad, Holt and Martin didn't work out a TV deal like, say, the Cisco Kid or Gene Autry. Anyway, about the only memorable part of this 60-minutes, is a leading lady who maybe can't decide on a stage name, but can sure shoot a gun.

British Talk-fest

This film doesn't comfortably fit in any American format of humor. There's a tiny bit of slapstick but not much, it's not screwball, it's not a situation comedy or a sophisticated one, it's not particularly visual...The Brits had their sparkling Ealing comedies, beloved around the world, tightly directed by some great people. These comedies were brilliantly written and wonderfully acted. And they all had places to go. This is a roller-coaster ride of words following words, non-stop. The comedy is broad to say the least - no subtlety here - and I found myself waiting it out until the end. No, it's not Lean, of course, but the Pickwick Papers couldn't match David Copperfield either I wish I could find something positive to say. The "Carry On" series had the public in Great Britain begging for more. They flopped here so maybe that's the answer - the cultural approach to humor that works better for some countries than others.

The Bowery Boys Meet the Addams Family

After a baseball breaks the window of "Louie's Sweet Shop", problem-solving leader Leo Gorcey (as Terrence "Slip" Mahoney) decides he his fellow "Bowery Boys" - accomplice Huntz Hall (as Horace "Sach" Jones), brother David "Condon" Gorcey (as Chuck), and Benny "Bennie" Bartlett (as Butch) - should get the kids playing in the Bowery off the streets and onto a safe vacant lot. Telephoning the lot-owning "Gravesend Family" at home, Mr. Gorcey wrangles an invitation to their mansion.

Mad scientist John Dehner (as Derek Gravesend) tells brother Lloyd Corrigan (as Anton) that Gorcey must be dim-witted, due to his mangling of the English language. The pair decide "Bowery Boys" would be perfect for head and brain transplanting experiments involving both a robot and a gorilla. Family matriarch Ellen Corby (as Amelia) would rather feed them to her man-eating tree. And, sexy vampire Laura Mason (as Francine) is looking forward to the arrival of new blood at the old house.

As a film series, "The Bowery Boys" looked like it was (generally) in an insurmountable rut, after a string of unsatisfactory films (see especially those from 1952). The quality was never all that dependable, but the movies did successfully entertain a targeted audience. While seeming to be finished, the series became sporadically good again, before the crashing in 1956.

"The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters" was one of the a high points; it was followed by the bad "Jungle Gents" (1954), then the good "Bowery to Bagdad" (1955). The title "The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters" suggests some inspiration from "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948), but this situation is more clearly swiped from Charles Addams' witty "The Addams Family" (begun as a comic strip in 1938), which spawned the memorable 1960s television series and imitations like this film.

Boulevard comedy

"Just a song of Paris, Music made for two, Brings me sweetest mem'ries, Memories of you!" The quality of the lyric of the title-song is broadly indicative of the quality of the film. That said, it is not a romance, but definitely a comedy, albeit one with a few (not very credible) romantic moments.

Matthew Ibbetson (Dennis Price) is a rather prim young man who has recently succeeded his father as head of a family firm producing patent medicines. Concerned about falling sales in France, he visits Paris and becomes enamoured of Clémentine (Anne Vernon), a cabaret singer. Shortly afterwards, she turns up in London and asks him to set her up in an apartment. Not the sort to contemplate keeping a mistress, Matthew thinks he ought to marry Clémentine, but he anticipates opposition from his overbearing mother (Hermione Baddeley). Worse still, an absurdly jealous old admirer (Mischa Auer) follows the singer from Paris, vowing melodramatically to kill his rival. Farcical incidents ensue.

"Song of Paris" falls between two stools. The farce is not sufficiently sustained to induce real hilarity, while the wit is never sharp enough for the piece to succeed as light comedy. In the last ten minutes or so, the silliness of the humour abruptly moves up a gear (and failed to carry me along with it, so the end did not come too soon). I see that Frank Muir and Denis Norden had a hand in the script. The cheerfully unsubtle tone does indeed recall 1950s radio comedy, and, for all its efforts to evoke the ambiance of 'Gay Paree,' the film is every bit as primly English as Mr Ibbetson. At first, Clémentine comes across as a good-natured courtesan, interested in the foreigner chiefly on account of his wealth. Once in London, however, she turns into a 'nice' girl who wants to get married and settle down – when the film might have been funnier had she retained more of her original character.

Dotted through the film are three or four songs. Clémentine sits at the piano, waves her hands over the keyboard, and the sound of an orchestra comes from nowhere to support her vocalising. Musical interludes of this kind seem to have been popular in the 1950s. Nowadays they seem embarrassingly phoney.

"Song of Paris" raises the occasional smile. No film can be all bad that has such standard British comic turns of the era as Kynaston Reeves as a vicar and Richard Wattis as a civil servant. Dennis Price, Hermione Baddeley, and Mischa Auer are all proficient comic actors, moreover, who do their best with the material given them - which only makes the viewer wish they'd been given something better. Ibbetson is perhaps too naïve a character to suit Price's talents; just a few years later the role would surely have gone to Ian Carmichael.

Review :

Early Boetticher western entertaining from beginning to end.

Irish (Van Heflin) has a mine in Mexico but when he strikes gold, the Federales commanded by Ruiz take it away from him, and while he is pursued by them his partner gets killed. He is rescued by the revolutionaries commanded by Raquel Noriega (Julie Adams). From then on Irish ends up helping them and falls in love with Raquel. Ruiz is married to Raquel's sister Elena (Abbe Lane). Julie Adams as a Mexican guerrilla fighter is outstanding, she even outshines a bombshell like Abbe Lane. Boetticher knows how to get the most out of the actors, and is a master when it comes to action scenes. Wings of the Hawk is entertaining from beginning to end, not a dull moment in this one.

Far from Pat

I add a comment because I think so many comments on this movie miss the mark. Watching this again after Katharine Hepburn's death, I was struck with how far ahead of its time this star vehicle was. Not only does it capture who she was, but it expresses a truth about women's equality that is not always fully evident in her body of work. Pat turns the tables on Mike. She owns him. She made him. And where would he be without her? There are instances in many of Hepburn's works where even her feminist leanings cave in to the conventions of the times. But in this one, she stays strong. She no doubt falls in love with the man of her dreams, but she doesn't do so at the expense of sacrificing any of her other dreams. Great fun flick from Tracy-Hepburn and one of my all-time favorites.

A married Broadway producer is taken with an innocent young woman who wants to be a writer and make it on Broadway. He decides to take her under his wing, but it's not long before the young lady is found dead in his apartment. At first thought to be a suicide, it is later discovered that she has been murdered, and suspicion immediately falls on the producer. He begins his own investigation in order to clear his name, and one of the first things he finds out is that the young woman wasn't quite as naive and innocent as she appeared to be.

Review :

entertaining story, magnificent visual effects

"Black Widow" is a well-written, though old-style, entertaining mystery. The story is taken from a novel by Patrick Quentin, a sound mystery-writer.

However the essence of the movie lies in the magnificent cinemascope photography, colors and visual effects. Note that most scenes have in the background large windows or terraces wide-open on the spectacular, terrific New York sceneries. Even the furniture of the various apartments is carefully chosen and placed, with beautiful artistic effects. Outstanding is the brief scene inside the dark bar, with the costumers merged into a liquid light: an evident reminiscence of Edward Hopper's paintings.

Alas! All these visual beauties are seriously damaged, if not destroyed, by the TV version, which essentially shows just half of the screen.

The performances by all interpreters are generally good and professional. A major (personal) disappointment is that Gene Tierney does nothing. She's not even in the list of suspects, since she was thousands of miles away from New York during the whole murder affair. She just sits silently on the background, adding her incomparable beauty and natural refinement to the magnificent New York views. It should be added that George Raft seems completely out-of-role... but I'm too fond of this guy to be able to criticize him.

"Black Widow" is a good film; hopefully someone will be able to see it on the wide screen.

Review :

A dull musical, as dull as the Pasternak musicals at MGM.

A very dull musical, not comparable with what director Sidney Lanfield had made at 20th.Century Fox in the thirties. No wonder this was his last picture. An example of the difference between what the Freed unit and the Pasternak unit were doing at MGM at the time. Of course, Esther Williams was as beautiful as ever.
